Health

It's expected that the potential applications of nanotechnology will improve the quality of life. IP NANOKER, for example, will deliver new materials for hip and knee prosthesis, dental implants and scaffolds. However, as with any new technologies there may be some associated risk. Regarding the results of IP NANOKER, these potential risks will be openly acknowledged and investiggated and ethical principles will be respected too.

IP NANOKER workshop “Nanomaterials and Environment: Handling and Management in Research Facilities”

The workshop on  “Nanomaterials and Environment: Handling and Management in Research Facilities” (20th December 2006 was held at the “Casa de Asturias” in Brussels.

The main objectives of this internal workshop was to arise project partners’ consciousness about environment handling nanomaterials, to find out actual data about possible environmental risks of nanoparticles in the Consortium, to discuss technical adequate inner and outer conditions of laboratories for the safe handing of nanomaterials and to develop guidelines for future laboratory planning and current laboratory management.

Public Consultation on SCENIHR Opinion on Nanomaterials

The European Commission has requested the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) a scientific advice on "the appropriateness of the risk assessment methodology in accordance with the Technical Guidance Documents for new and existing substances for assessing the risks of nanomaterials".
