Public Consultation on SCENIHR Opinion on Nanomaterials

The European Commission has requested the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) a scientific advice on "the appropriateness of the risk assessment methodology in accordance with the Technical Guidance Documents for new and existing substances for assessing the risks of nanomaterials".

The SCENIHR report, approved for public consultation on 29 March 2007, provides the Commission with a sound scientific approach on how to modify the Technical Guidance Documents of the EU chemicals legislation in regard to nanomaterials. The report provides proposals for general and specific modifications of risk assessment of human health and the environment, describes a staged strategy for the risk assessment of nanomaterials and identifies areas of further research.

Interested parties are invited to submit their comments on the evaluation and recommendations via the following website.

Deadline for the submission of comments is 23 May 2007.

The Guidelines for submission of comments, including the criteria for the public consultation, can be found
here

The outcome of the consultation will be published on the
SCENIHR site. More information on SCENIHR and the other non-food Scientific Committees of the European Commission can be found here
